Short film/Pilot episode
Synopsis
Twelve-year-olds Jesse and Annie seem to be living out an idyllic pastoral childhood on a beat-up old farm, running in cornfields, milking Betty the cow and fishing in the creek. It soon becomes apparent that something is not quite right. Jesse is unsettled and Annie’s behaviour is warped and manipulative. Annie tells her brother that they must save their parents from the twisters and hoppers that plague the dusty plains, and save themselves from their father’s drunken violence. Annie is convinced that making magic pies is the answer, and she takes matters into her own hands, murdering her parents in their sleep. When Jesse discovers what she has done, he realises he’s not safe either and runs from the farm, leaving Annie fatally injured. However, shocking and inexplicable violence follows him everywhere he goes, people behave out of character and repeat versions of his sister’s deadly childhood pranks. As he reaches manhood, Jesse realises he cannot escape the terror and must return to the farm to atone for his past.
